I recently set up a Gmail account on Google Chrome but when i enter it to add to my primary account recognized by Google and asks me to enter a Gmail account that i have , it tells me its taken by somebody else

The culprit in your case is that you may be choosing the "Create a new account" option instead of using a current account. Which item are you clicking?
