MY feed dogs will not go down. Seems to be frozen. How do I

Customer Question

MY feed dogs will not go down. Seems to be frozen. How do I loosen them up?
JA: I'll do all I can to help. How long have you been dealing with this?
Customer: I don't know. I haven't quilted in many years. I have TL98E
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Would like to if possible.
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: Why this question? I'd like to know how to release the feed dogs. I tried to place some oil where then gears rotate. That didn't loosen up.

I lifted up the top plate; added oil where the gears rotate. Saw a lot of dirt there. Cleaned what was visible with a cue tip.

Why did I get an engineer rather than a technician?

If the feed dogs are frozen and will not go down, you will need to add a drop of sewing machine oil to the joint. The feed dog mechanism can freeze up from accumulated gunk over time, and adding oil will soften it up.

You will have to wait a day or two for the oil to penetrate, and it may take more than one application to get the gunk softened.
