I'm having trouble getting my laptop to register my headset

Customer Question

I'm having trouble getting my laptop to register my headset as a separate device. I plug it in the jack and I can hear out of the speakers, but when I talk in a chat program like Skype or Discord, the computer defaults to using the built-in speaker. When I go to double-check input devices, the computer is only using the built-in hardware and not the headset.
JA: What's the make/model of your device? How old is it?
Customer: It's an Aspire E 15, and I've had the laptop for almost a year now. This problem started... I want to say two or three months ago.
JA: How long has this been going on? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: I've tried plugging in the headset several times, as well as checking through the programs what input device I was using and trying to swap to it, only to not see the headset show up in the list of devices being used. I've also gone into the device manager to see if the headset was picking up there, only to see the default.
JA: Anything else you want the electronics expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: No; this about sums up the problem.
