if I put a tone on my yaesu repeater, how will those who do not listen to the repeater avoid listening to it?

Hi, I’m Louie. Sorry you had to wait awhile but I’ll do my best to help.

Initially , sorry but no. Putting a tone would only restrict repeater activation to tone encoded transmissions. It would not prevent reception by any and all tuned to the repeater's TX frequency.
