Hi Steve,
I have a Garmin Nuvi 650 which recently started acting up. It appeared that the touchscreen was not calibrated suddenly, so I finally was able to calibrate it, but only partially. I could not touch some of the dots in the proper place (the upper right and upper middle if I remember right. So it is better than what I had, but not quite usable yet. Ever seen this?

Hello & Welcome,

I'm not Steve, but I may be able to help.

Can you tell me how long you have owned this unit and when this issue started?

Thanks

I have had this for about 10 months. A friend gave it to me as she did not use it (she thought she would). It was working fine until after the last trip we used it. I know it is an older model, but we have barely used it.

Steph

Hi again,

Maybe you can do a test for me?

If you can find a screen that has a lot of choices on it (like maybe the keyboard for letters and numbers), I would like you to press your finger on the screen and HOLD it down. Then slide your finger around slowly and see if there are different parts of the screen that do or do not respond.

For example, when you hold your finger on the keyboard, as you slide it around, different letters or numbers should "highlight" like they are being selected, and they would actually be selected when you "release" from the screen.

What I am looking for is to see if there are different areas of the screen that don't work at all.

Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX

Greg,

Yep this test worked---well sort of. When I started at the top for instance on the letter keyboard, I did not get the "A" highlighted until I got down to the "O" if that makes sense. It seemed pretty consistent to follow over left to right.

Hi again,

Are you saying that you can't select "A" at all, or that when you get to "O", the "A" is selected?

Ask Your Own Consumer Electronics Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
When I hold my finger down and travel it around the screen I CAN select the "A", but not until my finger travels to the "O".

That's not good.

Have you tried the Master Reset yet, to see if that will work?

This involves turning the unit on while you HOLD DOWN on the lower-right corner of the screen. I don't know if this will work at all, with the screen behaving the way it is, but it is worth a shot.

-----------------------

To perform a Master Reset on the nuvi 600 series device:

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

  1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
  2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
  3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
  4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
    • You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
  5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
  6. Touch Yes

The device will automatically reset. Follow the on screen prompts then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

-----------------------

We can also try to update the unit software, but I am starting to think that you have a hardware issue - with the screen - so that may not really help either.

Please try the master reset and let me know if that changes anything. If you do NOT get the screen that asks you to "clear the user data", then try once or twice more to see if that will happen.

Thanks, XXXXX

I did as you said many times and no luck, what is weird though is that part of the screen is working when I try to fool around with it. I was able to get to the "wrench" and tried to cick restore and it asked me the ? if I wanted to restore to factory defaults and I managed to click yes with some trouble but it did nothing. Powered it off again as it seemed to be inactive, or should I have waited?

I don't think waiting is going to do much good.

It sounds like a hardware issue to me. The screen has a "digitizer" below the front glass that senses the position of your finger. That information goes back to the controller as a series of signals that say "you are at position X, Y". I believe that either the screen digitizer or the controller is messed up, so the right information is not making it back to the position detection part of the system.

At this point, I would say it is time for repair or replacement.

Considering the age of the unit, it may be best to just replace it, as the price of a new unit would be very close to the cost of having it repaired. Plus you would get all new maps and probably a few new features on a new unit. But if you want to try the repair route, you can start the process at the following site. I assume the unit is older than 1 year total, since you got it from a friend.

Please let me know what you decide.

So one more question then. If it did get better with the calibration, isn't it possible it is not totally fried and somehow needs a further calibration? When I first started this process it would only sense my finger at the lower left corner and now I at least get half the screen. The only problem is how?? And yes, I believe it is over 2 years old, but like I said, hardly used at all. Cry

It could just be a loose connection, such as a "cold" solder joint, inside the unit.

You may want to "tap" on the outside of the unit, in a could of different spots, and then see if you can get a better response from the device.

I have seen these types of issues over my career in all things electronic, and these can be a real pain to troubleshoot. If it does end up being something like a poor or intermittent connection, it might work at different times, when the unit is cold or hot because of expansion and contraction, and the connection will be good sometimes and not at other times. You might even try recharging the unit and then putting it in the refrigerator for an hour or so and trying again (old trick).

So you can try to recalibrate again and see if you get better results, but I am pretty sure the issue will come back until the "real problem" is found and fixed.

Please let me know what you decide, or if you have more questions.

Good Luck, Greg A.

I am going to try your tricks, but in the meantime, you had mentioned about an updater? Is that worth a shot at this point? GIven that it was passed on to me as a gift, I really don't want to put a bunch of money into an older unit, but my husband does do some trucking and it is a nice gadget to have!

Hi again,

You can try a system software update (procedure below), and you should be able to do this if you have the USB cable that came with the unit.

But if there is a problem with the touch screen, you or your husband will probably be more frustrated with the unit than getting any real benefit from it. These "toys" can be great when they work right, but when they don't ... (fill in the blank).

-----------------------

The preferred way to update the Software in a Garmin device is by using WebUpdater.

WebUpdater is a free application that can be downloaded and installed on your computer. It will guide you through the process of updating the software for your Garmin device. WebUpdater can be run at any time to check and install applicable Software updates in a Garmin device.

Starting at the WebUpdater page: (http://www.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp)

  1. Plug your unit into the computer via the USB cable
  2. Click on Download under step 1
  3. Select the appropriate version of the WebUpdater based on your computer's operating system
  4. Click I agree to the above terms and want to proceed to the download page
  5. Click Download
  6. Select Run when the pop up box appears
  7. Select Run if a message appears asking "Do you want to run this software?"
  8. Click Next when the WebUpdater installation page appears
  9. Check the box to accept the licensing terms and select Next
  10. Select Done to complete the WebUpdater download

Once WebUpdater is installed on your computer, select the application, if it does not automatically open, to run the program and follow the prompts.

  1. Select Next on the WebUpdater Wizard
  2. Select Find Device and Next
  3. Select Next to update the unit software on your device and follow the prompts

Once you have run the software updates and updated your device, you will be prompted to search for additional updates. To load any additional updates, check the box next to the specific updates you wish to download. Select anything that relates to firmware, GPS software, traffic, vehicles or voice language relating to the versions you use. Once selected, click next and check the agreement box. At this point the updates will run directly to your Garmin device. Once the update is complete you will see a box showing the downloads and if they were a success. Click finish and unplug your Garmin from the computer to allow the updates to load. Once the update(s) are loaded, your device will return to the normal agreement screen and it will be ready to operate.

Notes:

  • Internet connection is required to communicate with the Garmin server and download applicable Software updates.
  • WebUpdater updates the applicable Garmin device with the most current software version available. Check back frequently for additional updates.

-----------------------

Please let me know what happens.

Take Care & Good Luck, Greg A.

Hi Greg,

I am revisiting my Garmin issue! I tried your refrigerator trick and no luck. I had heard from a friend to try the freezer, so I am going to give it a shot. My guess....it's junk. Too bad it seems nothing is made to last these days! Any suggestions for a replacement unit? What is good out there? We don't need a lot of bells and whistles and don't want to spend a bunch of money on one. Thanks!

Steph

Hi again,

Sorry for the delay.

The good news is that the "shopping season" has started and that there are a LOT of these units going on sale.

What I would suggest is that you check out Amazon.com to see what they have, AND then check the Garmin site to make sure that these are "current" models - so that you will be able to get support (if needed) for a longer period of time. I don't want you to be concerned about any Garmin GPS that you may get, as all of them come with a one year warranty, and Garmin is very good about supporting their products - even after the warranty has expired. As a matter of fact, they are one of the few companies that offers to repair their units (for a fee) - as long as they have the parts available to do the work. Other GPS companies do not offer such service, so I would stick with a Garmin.

Here is a link to the Amazon site where you would want to start looking -> CLICK HERE.

Here is a link to the Garmin page where you can check on if the units are "current" -> CLICK HERE.

Also be aware that you MAY be able to get local stores to match Amazon's price right now, since the shopping season is in progress. Just don't be afraid to ask the store clerk or even the manager for a matching price. Sometimes all it takes is to 'ask' for the better price.

I hope this helps. Please let me know what you find or if you have more questions.

Take Care, Greg A.
