Hello and welcome to Just Answer. My name is ***** ***** I will be happy to assist you with your electrical question.

Please be patient as it takes time to type and provide links. Also note that the website may be sending you a telephone offer, the offer is not originating from me.

1) Tandem breakers are different than a full size single pole breaker.

2) It is a violation of the National Electrical Code to use a different breaker manufacturer than the panelboard manufacturer per Article 110.3(B).

Circuit breakers must be listed or classified in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions for the panel

This distribution box has no main and spit tap. (Anyway I think that is what they call it. Can you get a GE 15/20 Tandem THQL Breaker. If not normally how much should it cost to install a new 125 amp distribution box to replace this current unit from the 80'S
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
No Main Switch

1) When listed panelboards are tested by an independent lab such as UL or ETL, the panelboard is tested and listed using the same manufacturer breakers as the panelboard manufacturer. If installing a different breaker manufacturer than from the panelboard manufacturer, this will void the UL or ETL listing.

2) Look at the panel label. Does the panel accept type "THQP" breakers?

No this panel is pre THQP single tag with one side T

1) Do any of the hot bus bar slots contain a notch? Slimline or tandem breaker positions are usually located towards the bottom slots.

Ask Your Own Electrical Question

1) I don't think that panel can support tandem or slim line breakers? If no notches on the hot bus bar stabs, then it won't support tandem or slim line breakers.

Not sure I am not a the house anymore to verify. Although I do not think so

1) I don't think so either. All of the type THQL breakers that I'm finding are are full size single or double pole. I know the type THQP have the slim line version, but I'm pretty sure the panel will not accept them.

2) If requiring a replacement panel, it really depends upon the quantity of branch circuits and if the circuits were wired using EMT conduit or a cable such as Romex. A ballpark price to replace the panel will be approximately $1500 and possibly more depending upon your location and if the local code will require AFCI breakers.

Kevin ok thanks for your assistance it was helpful. This is a old panel board and probably replaced for safety purposes any ways

Yes, it must be an older panel. I know the newer versions will accept type THQP breakers.

No problem, glad to assist.

Otherwise, don’t forget to rate me before you log Off.
