Customer Question
I had a Leviton...

I had a Leviton Wall Controller with Annunciator that stopped working and I tried to replace it with a 3 way switch from Leviton. When I connected the 3 way switch it keeps triggering my circuit breaker. Do I need a 4 way switch? I could not find the original part at home depot.

Contractor's Assistant: How old is the system in question? And have you consulted an electrician yet?

The house was built in 1994. It has been working since we have been here in 1999. I have not consulted an electrician.

Contractor's Assistant: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?

I tried to, yes.

Contractor's Assistant: Anything else we should know to help you best?

The switch is located in our kitchen and controls the light at the top of the stairs. It is on a 15 amp circuit with our Dining room which has two switches, one of which is a dimmer. The stair lights also has a switch at the top of the stairs but it is on a different circuit.

A black(hot), a red wire, a white wire, and the copper ground wire.
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

Is the white a neutral or a switch leg ?

Ask Your Own Electrical Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
I believe a switch leg because there is another switch for same light at the top of the stairs.
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

If that is a 3 way you need to have the Black, red and the white connected? ?

Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

Do you have a 2 wire tester ?

Ask Your Own Electrical Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
I have a 2 wore tester. I hooked up a Three way switch and my circuit breaker went off.
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

Test the 3 wires to ground with the tester and see what readings you get ?

Ask Your Own Electrical Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
Ok
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
I tested them. No readings on the white or red wire. Black wire gets 120 reading.
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

Than flip the other switch and see what your reading are ?

Customer reply replied 6 months ago
I did and they were the same.

What color wires are on the gold screws?

Ask Your Own Electrical Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
I put the red and white wires on the gold screws per the directions. I will check the other switch for how it’s wired.
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

That could be the issue but it shouldn't blow the breaker ?

I tested the black to white and got 120
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

So that white is a neutral not a switch leg !

Ask Your Own Electrical Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
But the white was hooked up to the original switch/annunciator?
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

If you put the black and the red on a single pole switch I bet the other annunciator will work ?

Ask Your Own Electrical Question
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

Yes as a neutral?

Ask Your Own Electrical Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
Ok I will try and rebook the original annunciator up with the red and black wire to black and the white to white.
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

no !

Ask Your Own Electrical Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
I misunderstood then.
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

On a single pole switch! Connect the black and the red and cap the white!

Ask Your Own Electrical Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
Are you saying to get a single pole switch for the upstairs switch that is working? Then hook up like you said and try the original annunciator again.
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

The original annunciator as a single pole switch !

Ask Your Own Electrical Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
Ok let me try it.
Electrician: George Smith, Master Electrician replied 6 months ago

No don't do that either!
