There are various causes .
I will list them in the order of most common.

1: burned out bulb .
With this you have to examine each bulb closely. The bad bulb will usually be dark looking and sometimes almost black. There should be some spare bulbs with the tree (often in a small plastic package near the plug.
You can use a magnifying glass to help examine the bulb . Good bulbs will have a small wire visible between the two electrodes (larger) inside the bulb . Unplug the bad bulb and carefully plug in the new one with the two small fine wires folded back and not touching each other.

2: missing bulb/s ...
Examine the cord bulb by bulb and make sure none are missing . Replace by carefully plugging in a new bulb.

3: bad fuses.......
The plug on the end of the light cord has a small cover that slides off.
Look carefully with a magnifying glass.
When you remove the cover two very small fuses will fall out .
They are glass with metal ends . They should be clean and clear and a close examination will show a small wire inside them. If the wire is not there or melted looking , (usually the glass will be smoky looking on a bad one ) then it is probably bad. Replacements should be with the spare bulbs. Replace and carefully put the cover back.

Broken wire... this is possible but not usual unless the tree has been abused by accident or a pet . Look for a bare or broken wire . It can be spliced back by twisting . Cut a short section of a drinking straw about 2inches or less . Slip it over one wire before splicing back . Then slip the straw over the splice.

NOTE : these are the most common fixable causes . This can be time consuming . Sometimes depending on the size of the tree it is faster and easier to remove the bad string and just add a new set of lights . You may have to cut the old set off the tree. This is of course a last resort but may be the best or only solution when the other methods fail .

If your tree has multiple strands you can just remove and replace the bad strand .
