I have three light switches to operate my stairway lights…

Customer Question
I have three light switches...
I have three light switches to operate my stairway lights and all three are 4way switches, they have two cables to each with red and white wires, and of course the bare ground wire, with the white having a piece of black tape on them. The switches that are failing have all brass screws and the Leviton switches I’m replacing them with have two black screws and two brass screws with each set being labeled either “in”or “out”. I’m not sure where to put the wires on these new switches.

There should be two 3-way switches on this branch circuit. You need two 3 way switches for multiple switching locations and anything more than the two locations would require a 4 way switch.

In any case, a multi-meter would be useful here. If you truly do have 3, 4 way switches, In and out wont wont matter, what will be important is to ensure the travelers are in correct pairs. They usually are together in the same sheathing. IE. The red and white with tape. Sometime this isnt the case. If i may have a photo of all three boxes clearly showing the wires withing, it would be most helpful.

I figured it out, there were 4 switches, 2-3way and 2-4way. It’s all working properly now.
