Customer Question

My device is showing an open neutral at an outlet. Has worked for years but began tripping the GFI, could the outlet itself go bad ?
JA: I'll do all I can to help. How long have you been dealing with this?
Customer: one day
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: yes
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: I changed the GFI before I tested the outlets. This is the only outlet that causes the problem. Refrigerator working with extension cord to outlet prior to the open neutral one

Try testing the outlet with a voltage meter, but it does sound like a bad outlet, I know I have had the same problem in the past and all I did was turn the power off to see if it would reset itself. When this did not work I tested it and it was dead. When you change the outlet, be sure to check the wires also, as something might have came loose. I replaced mine and it works perfectly to this day! Also check the wires on the GFI.

You should also check the devices and connections ahead of the problem outlet.
