a circuit breaker will not reset, i unplugged all the appliances , disconnected all the hot wires to the outlets and the last one i disconnected allowed me to resist breaker. i replaced it and it worked for a few hours. during the evening it tripped again and will not reset.

Are the boxes metal or plastic?

If metal, a clamp could be too tight on a cable entry.

If this trips with all devices removed (and you are certain all devices on this circuit are removed) some other possibilities are a staple that was too tight and has shorted the cable or other concealed physical damage including the possibility of rodents.

Is it possible to replace the first segment...the first part of the run from the panel to the first device? You could run a temporary test cable or cord from the panel the the first device to verify that the rest of the circuit is good.
