Customer Question

I have a house built in 1932 and the kitchen was changed in the 1950s. we took out the light over the sink to change the window near it. the light had a wire going to the switch and a wire going to an outlet for a clock above it. I want to put a light in above the sink now but can only get current if I connect the positive (black) to the ground or the negative (white) to the ground. What is going on and can I fix it?
