I found 12-3 running to a light fixture and 12-2 running out

Customer Question

I found 12-3 running to a light fixture and 12-2 running out from it to a switch. I replaced the fixture (single bulb to florescent) and it lights when the breaker is thrown, but the switch doesn't work. Black was tied to black, ground to ground. Red from 12-3 was tied to white (neutral) with a black pigtail (?) to fixture.
