Hi John. A 16 amp breaker is a 16 amp breaker regardless of how many poles it feeds. It would be incorrect to add up the 3 poles for a total of 48 amps. Each pole is protected at 16 amps, but you would still refer to the breaker as a 16 amp breaker, not a 48 amp breaker.
