Question - What is the process (for name change)?
Answer - The process to change the name of an adult (anyone age 18 or older) is rather easy. The short answer is that your child would appear in his local superior court after filing his petition and provided no one shows up to object, then the court will order the change to your child's name and issue an order to that effect. Question - Will they give him a new birth certificate with his new last name on it?
Answer - Yes, the court will order a new birth certificate be issued with the new last name. Your son would need to present the order to the state's vital records division and they would issue a new birth certificate (he will have to go to the state he was born in as that is the state that will issue his certificate).
Question - Can he get a new high school diploma if his old name is already on high school diploma and he graduated after he has changed his name?
Answer - The short answer is maybe. Georgia law only requires the school to issue a diploma in the child's then current legal name. That is why people do not get a new diploma upon marriage and taking their spouse's name. That being said, the local county school board can issue an exception and have a new diploma issued if you can show a good reason for it (i.e., the name has a traumatic connection, etc.).
Question - Will he get a new social security card?
Answer - Yes, he will get a new card with the new name on it, but it will be the same social security number.
