But, in any case. To get the Kindle to work, you must do two things.
1. Be able to log into wifi.
2. Be able to log into amazon.

You might go visit a restaurant or Library that offers free wifi and see if you can log in there. if so, then log into your amazon account.
You can then download the books. You will at least be able to read them once downloaded.

Connect to Wi-Fi to buy and download, stream or download from the Cloud, sync to receive items, or sync to the furthest page read. Help for Kindle Fire (2nd Generation), Kindle Fire HD 7" (2nd Generation), and Kindle Fire HD 8.9" (2nd Generation).

Your Kindle Fire automatically detects nearby Wi-Fi networks and wireless hotspots that broadcast their network name. Some networks are open for everyone to join, while others require a password ***** connect. You can connect your Kindle Fire to your home Wi-Fi network, public Wi-Fi networks, and some enterprise private networks.

1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to show Quick Settings, and then tap Wireless.
2. Verify that Airplane Mode is Off.

Does it DETECT that there IS wifi present at all?
Will it list the routers?
Is your router on the list?

But, it is NOT showing Your wifi address / router?

Start on page 25 of this owners manual and try what is written step by step.
Not sure whether to tell you to go try it on a public free wifi account first.
At least, if you were to connect to them, you could get your books and start reading.
I must change locations and drive to another. It will take me 30 minutes or so.
This will give you a chance to reread my answers and try the suggestions.
Let me know if you can connect to ANYONE's wifi. If it is not detecting YOUR wifi, in cannot connect to it.

You MIGHT have to tell your Kindle to FORGET your WIFI and then power it off and on again, then try again from scratch to reconnect to it.
Forget a Wi-Fi Network You can tell Kindle to forget the Wi-Fi network you’re connected to so that your Kindle doesn’t connect to it automatically in the future. To forget the Wi-Fi network that you’re connected to, follow these steps: 1. While connected to the network that you want to forget, press the Home button, then press the Menu button. 2. Navigate to “Settings” by moving the 5-way controller down, then press the 5-way controller to select. 3. Select “view” next to “Wi-Fi Settings” to display a list of detected Wi-Fi networks. You may have to wait a moment as your Kindle detects networks in range. The Wi-Fi network you are currently connected to displays the word “forget” next to it in the list of available networks. 4. Choose “forget” to disconnect from the network.
