Trying to register it with a login ID and password, but I'm not sure if I have them

It sounds like you are trying to register the kindle. Before we proceed further, I would like to ask you few question about this problem. Could you please tell me whether you have forgotten the Amazon ID or You have forgotten the Amazon account password?
