Initially, let's try check and review the basics:
do I lose all the books I had on it - no. All of the books purchased via your Kindle are automatically stored in the cloud (not iCloud);

can I replace them on a new Kindle - yes. Amazon keeps a copy of all of your purchased e-books on its servers for you to download any time.

If confirmed lost and can no longer be recovered, then it would be to your advantage to Deregister this Kindle from your Amazon account:

  1. Visit Manage Your Content and Devices;
  2. Select Your Devices;
  3. Select your device or app;
  4. copy its serial number to provide to Customer Service;
  5. then click the Deregister link underneath the device name;
  6. To confirm, select Deregister again on the pop-up window.
