I rec'd a letter from amazon stating my ereader required a

i rec'd a letter from amazon stating my ereader required a critical update, but when i follow instructions under settings then i hit the vertical tri dots again and see that the "UPDATE YOUR KINDLE' is faded I don't know how to update any other way
JA: What's the make/model of your device? How old is it?
Customer: two yrs and voyage i think 7th gen
JA: How long has this been going on? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: i'm not good w/tech savvy stuff my hubby has been going on line for me but we have hit a brick wall not knowing enough

It is possible that your Kindle already has the latest version available. The message that you received was sent to everyone with a Kindle even if you are on the latest version.

Let's double check the version on your Kindle...

From Home, tap the Menu icon, and then tap Settings.

From Settings, tap the Menu icon again, and then tap Device Info.

What does it say next to Firmware Version?

Is the Kindle connected to Wi-Fi right now?

I have it plugged into the electric socket not a computer, do i need to move to plug in the usb cord on the computer

If your Kindle is not connected to Wi-Fi then you will need to plug it into your computer.

If you wish to transfer the update that way..

  1. Turn on your Kindle and connect it to your computer using the USB cable.
  2. Drag and drop the downloaded update file from your computer onto the Kindle drive.

    Important: Do not drop the file into one of the folders within the Kindle drive.

  3. After the file has transferred successfully, eject the Kindle to safely disconnect your Kindle from your computer.
  4. Disconnect the USB cable from your Kindle and your computer.
  5. Start the software update:
    1. From Home, tap the Menu icon, and then tap Settings.
    2. Tap the Menu icon again, and then tap Update Your Kindle.

      Note: This option will be grayed out if the most recent update has already been installed or if the file transfer was not successful.

    3. Tap OK to perform the update. You will see Your Kindle Is Updating.

Once the update is complete, your Kindle will automatically restart.
