I received a Kindle from a friend who no longer uses hers

Customer Question

Hi I received a Kindle from a friend who no longer uses hers and I would like to now register it in my name. I went onto WiFi and entered all the information on Amazon to register but it would not register the kindle. What do I do to make it work
JA: What's the make/model of your device? How old is it?
Customer: The make is a Kindle Version 5.1.1. Not sure how old
JA: How long has this been going on? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: Only received it yesterday and tried at home. Am now at work and the WIFi is stronger here.
JA: Anything else you want the eReader expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: That is all for now. Might need assistance once I have registered with Kindle

Hi there and welcome

What was the message you got when it failed to allow you to register the Kindle?

Please let me know

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
When trying to register for an account with Amazon it comes up with "your account has been created, but there was a problem registering your Kindle. Please try again later"
Expert:  Richard replied 3 months ago.

This is usually an issue with the Firmware, so I would first like you to do this please.

Remove the charger from the Kindle and hold the power button to off for 35 seconds.

Release, then connect the charger and try to turn on the Kindle and tell me what then happens please.

Let me know the results please

Thank you

When I switch back on again, it connects to the Kindle logo. With the charger on, which is connected to my computer it says it is in USB Drive Mode.

ok, you need to disconnect it from the computer please.

Can you please reset the Kindle

To do this, go to menu, settings, menu, reset Kindle

Once done, setup the Kindle and tell me please if it will now register.

Let me know the results please.

Nope, still the same.

ok, can you create a different account via your computer on www.amazon.com

Once you have created a different Amazon account, use this one as an existing account on the Kindle
