If you have the model that only has WiFi for connections (and not 3G), then you will need a WiFi router to use it at home and download books. If you have registered it online through your Amazon account - it will continue to say "My Kindle" until it makes a network connection to synchronize with Amazon.
Many restaurants and coffee shops have fee WiFi that you can use to complete the registration and download some books (once you have downloaded a book, you do not need to have the WiFi).
If you have Internet at home - you can add a WiFi router, so you can use your Kindle, and other devices that use WiFi. An example is here, but local electronics/computer stores will have them also.
