Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer.

Normally that's a hardware fault, but let's try restoring the operating system to make sure that it's not software related. To do this, slide and hold the power switch until you see the Kindle screen flash (normally in about 20 seconds) and then release the switch. The operating system will reload. After it reloads, let me know if the problem persists or if it does not reboot.

I'll try what you said, but I cannot get to it for about an hour. Will I be able to locate you to continue our dialogue at that time?

I rebooted the system; the text is much easier to read. Thevertical lines remain The text screen is somewhat transparent, in that you can see the screen below it. Also, there is a white (absence of color) rectangle at the top right of the screen. There are also two horizontal lines at the top, approximately 1/2 inch apart. The vertical lline is actually two lines, one much bolder than the other. They are both white and they go from the top of the screen to the bottom 1/3.

It sounds like your screen is failing. You can try rebooting if it gets so bad that you can't read it. When did you purchase it?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
Approximately two years ago.

I was hoping it was still within the warranty period. If you can still manage reading with it and don't mind rebooting it, continue use until it fails. However, if it drives you crazy (as it would me), you can contact Kindle Repair Support at(NNN) NNN-NNNN Before you go for just a repair, you may want to inquire about a trade-in for a new model. Your books will all be able to be downloaded from your Amazon account, so you won't need to repurchase them. It may be just a small amount above the cost of the repair.
