can a urine test tell the difference between valium and xanax
Thank you:

Yes - while both drugs will be identfied as benzodiazepines on a screening test, the subsequent GC/MS or LC/MS confirmation test will differentiate these two drugs since they have completely different metabolites.

If have a perscription for valume and declared it pre test. Will the subsequent test be for specific benzodiazepines or just for the levels of benzodiazepine present in the urine to ensure the perscription is being followed ?
Why is this test being done; job, legal, medication monitoring?

Can you give me a bit more detail on the situation that lead to your question?

For a random work place drug test.
Thank you

Employement testing is NOT conducted to determine if someone is using their prescription medication. It is designed to deter and detect use of illegal drugs and the abuse of prescription drugs without a prescription.

IF the drug test includes testing for the benzodiazepines (which many do not include), the test would be confirmed with GC/MS to determine the specific metabolites. Since Xanax and Valium have different metabolites, a valid prescription for Valium would not be considered a medical explanation for the detection of Xanax metabolites. The detection of Xanax would be considered a positive test even with your prescription for another benzodiazepine (Valium)

I hope this better explains the situation...
