I can see why there's that confusion. As you described, everything out here seems to be in order, yet you're still having the nightmares after a year of having them. Within the last year, how frequently do you have them? Once a week, twice a week, once every other week? Whenever they arise it will be good to look at your experience the other day.

Dreams reflect what were aware of and sometimes what we aren't aware of, which is what makes them very valuable to look at and consider. The average person thinks about 60,000 thoughts per day -- that's a lot of information to try and take in consciously, so that's where dreams come in. Pictures are worth a thousand words, so the dreams we have each night are a way of letting us know what was occuring from the subconscious mind's perspective: that part of our mind that doesn't have any trouble keeping track of everything that's happened.

My suggestion is to try out the suggestions I gave originally (writing down your ideals, goals, dreams, etc. and working on staying completely focused on them) for a week and then track your progress and see if there's any change to the dreams you're experiencing. We can keep this question open so that we can still continue to talk back and forth about whatever you're experiencing (*NOTE: Giving a rating to this question closes the question! Another thing you could try is practicing concentration exercises. Again in the dream, you're being pushed into a train not of your own doing and moving in a direction you don't want to. Concentration exercises practiced everyday will strengthen your ability to direct and hold your mental attention on anything you want: a single thought, a conversation you're having, the task at hand, etc. Although it works on a subtle level, it benefits everything you do, slows your mind down to the point of being able to recognize much more of your thinking process in the moment, and you might discover something in the process -- perhaps even the cause of the dreams.

Choose an object of your choice and place it in front of you on a table about arm's length away in a well lit room. Set a timer for ten minutes and set it in a place that you cannot see it. Then, focus your full undivided attention on the object, remember to breathe deeply, and gently gaze at it (don't stare...don't want to hurt your eyes by straining). The object of the exercise is to keep your full undivided attention on the object. Whenever you recognize that your attention wanders to something (this will happen), simply take note of it and redirect your attention back to the object. Then you finish after the timer goes off.

I have a friend who practiced this with his five year old son for a year, because his son wanted to "do what Daddy was doing." The first time his son sat down with him, the son lasted a good 15 seconds before he ran off -- typical boy at five, right? However, with out fall, the son did this with his father everyday for a year. He was able to keep his attention steady, his mind quiet, and his body relaxed for the entire ten minutes a year later.

It seems simple, yet there's a lot of power the son gained from doing that and it's exciting to see what occurs in his future as his mind stays focus. I bring that up now because it's tougher to "push someone who has a really focused mind into a train."
