I think your dream is processing your emotional journey with perhaps your ex finace?
The water you fell into seems to represent emotions, you may have felt like you were being supported (boardwalk) in the emotional department of the relationship (water), then you slipped and fell in (trouble in the relationship or it's ending).
Your ex going to help you but then says he does not want to get wet, may be saying that he really wasn't willing to get into the emotional aspect of it.
The superhuman recovery on your part is a good part of your dream, you were able to bounce back from the break up and get back on your feet emotionally.
