When individuals are close to one another it's possible to incubate a dream on each other's behalf. This dram's symbolism can be examined as it applies to you as well as your sister.
Dreaming of snakes is often associated with an underlined anxiety. Snakes although frightful creatures to many people are not always a bad sign. Snakes can be associated with learning, knowledge and spiritual information/occult. The color black is also not necessarily a negative color. It is associated with protection (if you think priests/nuns wear black robes) and the color is known to repel negative energy as well as to keep the individual grounded. A snake can also be a totem animal. As such, it represents transformation and healing. It appears not to scare you or harm you but to offer you the ability to move on after a period of stagnation. It could have tried to bite the two of you as a way of drawing your attention as well as to dare you to do something. Perhaps that is why you were unable to kill it.
Having encountered the snake on a deserted road can be seen as a symbol of having reached an impasse (feeling stuck in a certain area of your life).
A dream symbol can have many meanings and it usually reflects the dreamer's inner being. If you felt terrified in your dream and protective of your sister, the dream may be connected to a situation/issue that your sister rather than you is dealing with where you feel the need to protect her from others. A snake can also be seen as a symbol of deceit. If someone had been dishonest to her, the dream could of manifested as a result of you being upset about that situation.
This could then be your totem appearing to you as an attention grabber. People can access their particular totem's energy. In this dream, the snake was not giving up. This may be a hint for you not to let go of something you're dealing with/believe in at the moment. It can apply to your sister as it reflects you being her protector from what you've shared. Even simply being there for her when she needs you. It is fascinating that you've had snakes as pets.
