I dreamed I was on...

I dreamed I was on a pier about 40 feet above the water, there was someone else on the pier fishing and I remember thinking "you'll never catch and pull a fish up this far". Lookng down into the water (i am uncomfortable with heights, but i remember it is a dream and i am ok) and it is shark infested and they are large sharks, I can see the outline of their bodies under the water, there are a number of small boats with fishermen in them and a few people in the water, one man tries to warn another of the shark and it's too late, there is a swirl and he is gone, there is no blood. I am not scared (i used to have a fear of sharks and did not swim in the ocean for many years, but not so much anymore) but am amazed there are so many of them, they are larger than the boats, but are not overturning them or bothering them in any way. hi I wanted to ask some questions as I go through the dream. and how it relates to your personal life. This is the best way for the interpretation to have the most personal meaning to you.

Psychotherapist :

When you were on the pier, how did you feel being 40ft up from the water in the dream? It sounds like you had some self doubt? It also sounds like you had a lucid dream because you knew you were dreaming and soothed your discomfort from heights. In real life do you tend to doubt yourself?

Psychotherapist :

I would imagine it was scary to see the shark infested waters, is that what you felt when you noticed the sharks under the water in the dream?

Psychotherapist :

What did you feel in the dream when the one fisherman tried to warn the other but it was too late?

Psychotherapist :

In real life do you feel that there is some danger underneath the surface in some aspect of your life ? Have you or someone else pointed this out?

There is also an interesting theme of fears that are conquered in the dream. You are afraid of heights but you sooth yourself and are seemingly ok. You also see sharks and even see one get a man but you feel you have over come this fear? Is there anything going on in real life where you have made progress in self doubt or over coming fears?

Also you are amazed that something dangerous can be beside people who are vulnerable and not bother them? Again this could be related to overcoming some kind of fear or realizing you do not have to fear it? What do you think?

In my early 20's I did become afraid of heights, take my breath away afraid. I also had a phobia of sharks after the Jaws movie. I learned to swim by the time I was 6 in the Atlantic but was petrified to go in for 10 years, then one day I just let my love of the ocean take over and I got in. Then about 7 years later a 10 year old boy was bitten by and subsequently died from a shark attack near where I regularly swam. Have not been in Atlantic since. Swam in Pacific 2 years ago, but was a little nervous. I think the vulnerable issue is real, I think every day we are exposed to dangers we are unaware of and we can chose to be on guard, pay attention, or use comon sense. I am an only child and lost my parents a decade ago and it has been a rough road filled with poor decisions and many other loses. I feel like I am becoming "normal" again and trying to make the best of my life and take care of myself (in late 50's). As far as the man trying to warn the other of the shark, I feel that friends ask for advice and I try to warn them and when they don't heed warning, watch as they recover from the "event". I probably do doubt myself from the last 10 years of bad decisions I have made and how it profoundly changed my life, I went from being very secure and having just about everything I wanted to losing almost everything. I came very close to not even having a place to live or any means of supporting myself to now doing well again. Think I never realized how important and supporting my folks were until they were gone. Now have learned to take care of myself.
