I agree, it is unusual for two people to have a similar dream. I have heard of it happen more than several times, and it indicates that both you and your boyfriend have similar fears.
These are venting dreams that are releasing the traumatic fear of something that you share in your life. That you are unable to breathe means that you are overwhelmed and indulging indulging in negative, fear-based emotions.
Something or someone is threatening your relationship or your emotional well-being, and you are resisting, successfully through your own personal inner strength or deep religious beliefs, and your boyfriend has done the same through sheer will-power.
There is something disturbing your relationship, some unfinished business, someone from the past, something that is being ignored or help in secret. You must try to discover what it is and deal with it, although these dreams are also helping you to vent these fears.
