Hello! I am Dr. Erica, a licensed veterinarian with JustAnswer, and I am here to help you! I have been a veterinarian treating dogs and cats for 15 years. JustAnswer is a forum for veterinary consultation and advice. Veterinarians in the United States are not legally permitted to make a diagnosis or write prescriptions online. However, I am here to help guide you and your pet toward a resolution to the best of my ability. Please allow me a few minutes to review your question. I may ask a few additional questions to gain understanding and better help you and your pet. I appreciate your patience.
It sounds like you are concerned about your dog Walnut who is having an issue with his mouth. I understand that you are concerned about an abscessed tooth, but there are other reasons a dog might have pain when opening the mouth. What breed of dog is Walnut?
Is he having any other symptoms to make you specifically concerned about a tooth, or just the pain when opening his mouth?
Ok - unfortunately, it is not going to be possible for me to tell you exactly why Walnut is experiencing oral pain. As I said, you are correct that a tooth infection is one cause of this type of symptom, but we can also see some issues with the muscles or bones of the jaw, problems with the tongue or roof of the mouth, and other medical problems that can cause similar symptoms. You will need to take Walnut in to see your family veterinarian for an exam, including a thorough examination of his mouth and face. If he is unable or unwilling to eat or drink, then I would consider it urgent and recommend you have him seen either by your family vet, or at an urgent care/emergency facility in the next 24-48 hours at most.
You're welcome. Is there anything else I can do for you today? Any further questions for me?
