Customer: Sometimes he has a hard time breathing and you can hear the fluid I've tried amoxicillin antibiotics and Mucinex I'm wondering if SA l i x is something I can give him once a day it was for my other dog that had congestive heart failure I'm wondering if he has the same thing he's a 16 year old Maltese
JA: I'll do all I can to help. I know breathing problems can certainly be worrying. Does the Maltese have a cough as well?
Customer: I cannot get him to cough I think if he would cough he would clear a lot of it out
JA: What's the Maltese's name?
Customer: Gypsy
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: It may also be fluid in his sinuses cuz he had a hole where they removed the tooth but I think it's his heart

Hi - Doc Nelson here with JA - I have been a vet for over 30 years. I just logged onto the website and saw that you have not received an answer yet - I'm terribly sorry about that! Please be patient with me as I type up my replies as I can't type very fast!

I'm so sorry that Gypsy isn't doing well! I would not give him Salix until he has been examined in person by a vet as you could potentially do Gypsy more harm than good.

I agree that Gypsy has symptoms of congestive heart failure, but there can be other causes for the symptoms you have described as well, including pneumonia, bronchitis, lung cancer, a ruptured thoracic duct, etc.

I am sorry, but you really need to bring Gypsy in to a local vet for an exam, including listening carefully to his heart and lungs with a stethoscope. They may need to take chest x-rays as well. Once the vet has determined the underlying cause of Gypsy's symptoms, they can then formulate an appropriate treatment plan based on the clinical exam findings. Dogs with congestive heart failure usually need a heart medication in addition to the Salix to help prevent the back up of fluids into the lungs in the first place. The Salix only helps remove fluids, it doesn't do anything to help the heart failure.

The vet should do some bloodwork as well to assess the health of Gypsy's kidneys. If he has kidney disease, then he may not be able to have the Salix as it could harm his kidneys even more.

If you have financial concerns, you could try calling your local humane society, animal shelter, or ASPCA as they generally know if there are any low cost vets in your area. I realize it can be hard to justify putting a lot of money into an elderly dog, but depending on what is going on with him proper treatment could give him a year or more of good quality life. I hope Gypsy is all right and that he does well for you!

thank you so much for your response but right now I'm fighting bone cancer and on Social Security and don't have the money and he is Skin and Bones right now he got sick right when I got sick lost weight lost his sight lost his hearing and he's not doing well some of the fluid seem to dry up when I gave him a Mucinex and I gave me antibiotics for at least 15 days and it did seem to clear up a little but it's still there that is why I think it is congestive heart failure and I didn't know if s a l i x would help to dry up the fluid his hips are also not good he can't walk very well anymore I really don't have money
Sorry I could not respond sooner. I am so very sorry for your situation. There are some low cost vets that base charges on your income, so it is worthwhile to see if such a vet exists in your area. I would like to be able to tell you to just go ahead and start the Salix for Gypsy, but I cannot do so in good conscience. I really hope you can manage to have Gypsy evaluated so he can receive proper treatment.
