Customer: We came home and our puppy had gotten through the gate and into my son’s room. It appears he ate chocolate but I don’t know how much. Should I take him in? He’s 6 months old and weighs 5 lbs.
JA: I'll do all I can to help. How much does the puppy weigh?
Customer: 5 pounds
JA: When was this? Has he thrown up since eating the chocolate?
Customer: We were gone for 3 hours so I don’t know when in that time he ate it. We’ve been home about 2 hours now. He has not thrown up that I’ve seen.
JA: What's the puppy's name?
Customer: Winston
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: His breed is a Cavapoo

Hello, my name is***** and I have been a licensed veterinarian since 2007. I'm sorry to hear that Winston got into some chocolate. Is he having any panting or hyperactivity? Do you know how much chocolate was available for him to ingest?
He isn’t seeming extra hyperactive, he’s asleep on my lap. No panting. And the chocolate available to him was one of those giant sized hersheys kisses but I don’t know how much was gone before he ate it and my son can’t remember.
There’s still about half of the kiss left

Ok. Since he hasn't had any vomiting or diarrhea so far, and is not having any panting or hyperactivity, I'm hoping it wasn't too much. I would continue to monitor him throughout the night (you might want to set a few alarms). If he doesn't have any vomiting or diarrhea, panting or hyperactivity by morning, then he should be okay. The milder signs of chocolate toxicity are vomiting/diarrhea, so if you see these, be on alert for the more serious signs of panting/hyperactivity and if you see those, get him to an emergency vet right away for treatment.

Ok thank you.
How often through the night should I check on him?

I think once every 2-3 hours would be enough.

Ok sounds good. Thanks so much!

You're very welcome! Hopefully he'll be just fine.
