Customer: My 4 yo golden retriever hasn't eaten since Tuesday and is straining to deficate. He's somewhat lethargic but normally a very calm do. Should I take him to the ER? he has a vet appointment Monday with his regular vet
JA: A lack of appetite can seem worrying. The Expert will know how to help. Does the Golden Retriever seem to be in any pain?
Customer: No no pain and he's drinking water. Not bloated
JA: What's the Golden Retriever's name?
Customer: Murphy
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: I have 6 dogs total so it's hard to tell which one has thrown up, etc. One of them threw up while we were sleeping on Sunday night. Murphy didn't eat Monday but ate Tuesday. There's been no more throwing up. He poop a bit during the week but was straining to go more. This morning he wasn't able to go

Hello there. This is Dr.Paul Brazzell. I am sorry that you are having trouble with Murphy.

I can understand how stressful it is for you. I will do my utmost best to help you. Please note that it may take a few minutes to see my reply to your posts. Discussing the case by phone allows me to be more efficient and accurate in assessing the problem. Now, let’s see if we can get this sorted out for you. Is he neutered?

Customer
Okay

Hi! Is Murphy neutered?

Customer
neutered up to date on shots and the only medication he takes is triheart. He was given triheart on monday

Thank you so much. Is his tummy enlarged? Is he breathing faster or harder?

Customer
No not larger or hard. Breathing normally

Thank you so much. Are his gums pink? Is he having any trouble peeing?

Customer
Let me check his gums. Peeing fine
Customer
His gums are pink but maybe a little lighter than usual can't really tell.

Thank you so much.
Does he have any other medical problems? Is he taking any medications?

Customer
As far as I know he hasn't eaten anything that would cause an obstruction
Customer
Only takes Tri-Heart monthly. Was given one on Monday
Customer
No other medical issues

Thank you for that information. Please give me a few minutes to type my recommendations.

Okay, I am back. I am quite worried about Murphy. I do think that it would be a good idea to have him examined today. We have to worry about an intra-abdominal mass, a colonic mass, Lyjmphosarcoma, a prostate problem(mass), and enlarged intra-abdominal lymph nodes, amongst other things. We will want to have them check his blood and urine and take abdominal X-rays, and possibly ultrasound his abdomen. I am so sorry.

Hi Dr Paul I took Murphy to the ER today and he has been hospitalized overnight. Attached is the treatment plan and report. The vet said he is very sick and possibly has liver failure or pancriatitis. I wasn't able to do the diagnostic ultrasound due to limited financial resources. But I'll find away if you think it's necessary. I had to go with the minimum treatment listed. I will have to bring him home tomorrow or have him PTS if critical. He has an appointment Monday afternoon with his regular vet.

Hi. Sorry, Just started my day. I will review it and get back to you later this morning.

Paul

Customer
Ok

Thank you so much. Did they check the urine?

Customer
I believe so if it's in the report I gave you. But if they didn't ill mention it today
Customer
They called this morning and Murphy is still feeling dumpy, he hadn't urinated, or eaten. So they did a catheter and want to do a feeding tube. They want to keep him another night but I can't afford

Oh, dear. I am sorry that he is struggling. I do not see a urinalysis report. So if they did not run one, it may be a little difficult to interpret since they have been giving him intravenous fluids.

Customer
would you recommend UA? They took out 600 ml this morning the urine was very dark

Hmmm. That is odd that it is dark despite all of the fluids. They should run a basic urinalysis, yes. We are looking for Bilirubin.

Customer
Ok I'll ask them to run it
Customer
If pancriatitis takes awhile on medication for him to feel better. Would it be OK to bring him home tonight and just do care at home? I can get him into my vet during the week and he has an appointment with our vet tomorrow afternoon

It is difficult for me to make any recommendations since I do not know his current status. I am so sorry. The doctors there are in a much better position to make those recommendations. I am so sorry.

Customer
Thank you I understand. The vet said he didn't really need IV Fluids if I bought him home just that it takes time and he would be on antibiotics anti nausea and pain meds

Okay, that is fair. :)

Customer
Thanks

Happy to help!
