Hello, this is Dr.Beth Goforth.  I will send a reply in about 30 minutes.
Customer
Ok

The first thing you should do is thiroughly flush his eyes with either eye wssh or tap water. It msy not help, but please do it in case there is something irritating in the eyes.

It is probably an allergy to either something in the environment or possibly to a food.. A skin parasite is also a possibility.

At home you can try giving Kobe Benedryl.  Benedryl is not always effective in dog allergies but it is safe and worth a try. Give one to two mg per pound body weight by mouth 2 or 3 times per day. Use tablets. The liquid tastes terrible..

If he is taking Nexgard,  Bravecto,  Simparica,  or  Credelio  for flea and tick preventions, then you do not have to worry about any   skin parasites..

If  Benedryl does not resolve 100% of the itching, I recommend you take him to your vet.  If medication for itching  and flea control pills do not work, then you may fnd he is allergic to more foods than just chicken.. This can be diagnosed by going food trial with hypoallergenic  prescription.

I hope this is helpful and that all goes well..

Beth Goforth,  DVM

Customer

Customer
Thought it was benedryl but ended up giving him a 10 mg of loratadine. Did I just overdose him?
Customer
It said allergy med
Customer
Gave him loratadine instead of Benedryl accidentally. I thought it was Benedryl. I gave him 10 mg. He weights 20 lbs. did I overdose him?
Customer
The box said allergy med
Customer
After the fact, I realized it wasn't Benedryl

I don't think so. Please tell me his weight and I will check.

Customer
20 lbs

Oh, i just saw he weighs 20 pounds. I wil check the dosage and get back to you.

Customer
Ok thank you
You gave him a little more thsn twice the upper recommended dose . You may see some side effects, but he will not threaten his life . Side effect could be sedation or it could be the opposite  which is hyperexcitability..  if this were my dog , i would not induce vomiting. I thinks he will be fine.

By the way, loratadine is not as likely to help as is Benedryl.  Don't give sny Benedryl now..

Customer
Ugh I feel badly
Customer
Ok he is sleeping
Customer
Benedryl in the morning?
Customer
I will go to the store in the morning
Customer
Thank you very much
Don't feel bad. He will be fine. Sleeping is better that constantly rubbing his eyes. Yes. Benedryl in the morning is fine, especislly if the loratifine helps. It might be easier to go to your vet.
Customer
Ok thank you very much
You are very welcome!
