Hello, I’m Dr. Lisa. I would recommend getting her spayed now. If you spay before the first heat cycle it will eliminate the risk of mammary cancer. I’m sure at 9 months she has already had one but you can drastically reduce the chances of it if you get it done before her 3rd heat cycle. As far as hip dysplasia goes it is mostly genetic but we do see increased incidences when spayed before 6 months of age but she is well past that.
You’re welcome. Sexual maturity is at their first heat cycle so you may want to wait until after if she hasn’t had one yet. There are other types of cancers correlated with spaying in general but not enough research done with whether the risk is higher when spayed younger vs older. The majority of veterinarians agree that since risk of mammary cancer is so high in our middle aged to older unspayed dogs that spaying should be done sooner than later. If she were mine I would wait until after her first cycle and then spay if that helps.
