Customer: Hello. I have a 15yo boxer. His left back leg is bothering him. He's been limping when he first gets up but seems to walk it off after awhile. I didn't know if there was something I could do for him. He's not whining or crying when he walks
JA: Hi there. I'll do all I can to help. Does anything look different with the dog's legs/feet? When did this start?
Customer: I don't feel that anything looks different. He started this on Thursday night
JA: What's the dog's name?
Customer: Butch
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: Nothing that I can think of, he's just really old

Hi there, I'm Dr. Helen

First, let me say good job on your care of Butch.

You can give him fish oil.  How much does he weigh?

You can also start him on a joint supplement.   The one I like is Dasuquin.

Customer
Thank you. He weighs about 65

I would give him 3000 mg of fish oil a day.

Customer
Fish oil capsules from the vitamin section?

Acupuncture works too, if you have someone who can do that nearby.

Yes, fish oil capsules from the drug store.  Make sure they are pure fishoil, no added vitamins.

Customer
I don't believe we have anyone local that does acupuncture

You can also talk to your veterinarian about pain medication such as gabapentin or tramadol.  I don't like NSAIDS in my older patients due to GI side-effects.

Customer
Dasuquin is found at a Petsmart or something similar?
Customer
How about aspirin?

Try some of these, or all of these.  Dasuquin should be at Petsmart- stay with that brand.  I'm unimpressed with the knock-offs.  Also, warmth on his hurting leg.  Just be sure it isn't too hot (check on your wrist first).

Aspirin is a NSAID and better to stop clotting, so I wouldn't use it on my old dog.

Customer
Ok, sounds good

Good luck with the old guy.

Customer
Thank you

My pleasure.  Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns.
