Customer: my 14 year old Silkie has recently been losing weight. She normally runs about 8 1/2 pounds and I weighed her today and she is 7.1 pounds. She is active, doesn't act sick, eats well. I feed her Senior Science diet plus she gets some boiled white chicken every day. What can I supplement her diet with?
JA: I'll do all I can to help. How has the dog's appetite been? Any changes in her stool?
Customer: no her appetite is good and she begs for treats too. Stool is normal except she has recently become intolerant of milk products (like licking my ice cream bowl).
JA: Could she have eaten something unusual?
Customer: no I don't think so. We are careful about what she eats.
JA: What's the dog's name?
Customer: Lilly
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know about Lilly?
Customer: not really. She acts normal.

Hello, my name is***** and I'd be happy to help you! My job here is to determine whether or not diagnostic tests need to be run or if we can manage things at home.

Has there been any changes to how much Lilly is drinking?

It's hard to say for sure since she shares her water bowl with 2 cats, but I have seen her go and get a good size drink

Any changes to how often she has to go outside and urinate? Is she eating any less than normal?

- Dr. Annie

Due to her age, my top concern for weight loss would be muscle loss (cachexia) which can be a normal aging change or metabolic/organ changes (kidney disease, liver disease), among other things.

The best way to sort out whether this is an aging change for Lilly vs. something else such as kidney disease, I would advise calling her family vet to set up an appointment for her to be looked at and possibly have bloodwork checked. That way, if there is an underlying cause, she can be promptly started on treatment or supportive care to help!

I hope this is helpful!
