Customer Question
My 8 year old Frenchie...
My 8 year old Frenchie just started having seizures. He has had 2 now. He had one 6 months ago and then had one 2 days ago. He had an MRI done 6 months ago (after the seizure) and the neurologist said that he doesn’t seem to have something wrong that shows up and so that it is epilepsy. Could this be possible / is this at all heard of that dogs develop epilepsy so late in life? Is this common to the Frenchie breed? I am searching the Internet hoping to find something that says this, so I stop worrying about a brain tumor. I want to hear that it is common to have 2 and then never again...
The neurologist wants to put him on medication for epilepsy, but 2 other vets told me that epilepsy medication should be avoided unless the seizures are frequent.
I am trying to think what could be causing the seizures. Could it be asbestos? (I live in an old building and the wall plaster has been crumbly on one wall - do my dog and I have asbestos poisoning?) Could it be from chemicals in dog food? What was the reason Acana recalled some of their dog food?
Can you think of anything else? What do you think of all of this? What should I do?
What do you think is going on?
I just want the best for my Frenchie - he is the light of my life and my son. I would do anything for him. It is horrible to see him suffer. I almost can’t handle it - my body shuts down. He deserves better.
Please let me know what you think I should do. Thank you so much!

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner and I'm sorry to hear of this with your Frenchie. To answer you directly, yes, adult onset epilepsy is recognized and can arise in any breed. Frenchies aren't over-represented with adult onset-epilepsy which is uncommon in any event. The frequency and severity of the seizures are unpredictable. With a negative MRI, brain tumor shouldn't be a consideration. Mark your calendar for these events and for just what you witnessed. His vet will need all the information you can gather when deciding if he should be prescribed an anticonvulsive drug. Most of us will accept one mild (lasting less than 5 minutes, no thrashing about, no loss of consciousness) event monthly before prescribing such a drug. Should he suffer another event within 24 hours of a prior one clustering is diagnosed and that may presage status epilepticus - the state in which seizure activity doesn't abate unless I heavily sedate or anesthetize my patient. He would then need the attention of a vet at your earliest convenience.

I have no information concerning asbestos and seizures in dogs. There is no evidence that dog food ingredients are seizure-inducing. The Acana brand has not been recalled. In March 2018, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Champion Petfoods, accusing the company of “negligent, reckless” practices, false advertising, and “failing to disclose the presence of heavy metals and toxins” in its Orijen and Acana dog foods. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
