My 45-pound bull terrier (standard, female, spayed) broke her leg two weeks ago and had surgery on Wednesday, May 23rd. The surgeon put a few pins in her back right leg. She is currently wearing a cone and is not permitted to jump; she's doing just fine, it appears.
I'm writing because she had diarrhea this morning (after a large, regular defecation last night) and also vomited.

Could this be simply a matter of eating something that upset her stomach? Or should I be worried about an infection? The surgical site is clean and there is no red skin nor any pus.

I understand your concern. I don't see any reason to associate her gastrointestinal distress with her surgery particularly because the surgical site is normal. As you mentioned, a simple dietary indiscretion could cause such distress as could a change in food, an antibiotic she's taking (or was taking) post-operatively or any number of possible causes inside her gastrointestinal tract or elsewhere in her body but which is affecting her GI tract. In otherwise normal dogs, I'll continue to monitor for up to 72 hours as most dogs will normalize unaided within that time frame. There's no need to medicate or change her diet at this time. I would only fast her at least 6 hour following her last vomiting episode in order to rest her GI tract. Water should be left down unless drinking inducing more vomiting at which time it would be prudent to replace her water with ice cubes to lick. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Thank you! I discontinued her painkillers because they were constipating her, but that's the only medicinal change I have made. (That was about 72 hours or so ago, which might be coincident with this digestive timeframe?)I appreciate your help.

That's a bit long ago for the painkillers (or lack of them) to be incriminated. You're quite welcome. Thank you for your kind accept. I appreciate it. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.
