She has been on anti biotics for a week due to a respiratory infection. We noticed quite a bit of blood in her urine. Is this common? She seems to be feeling fine, ate her dinner, very energetic also.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What sort of animal are we talking about?

50 lb lab mix

Veterinarian's Assistant: The Expert will know if the lab will be able to digest that. What is the lab's name and age?

Her name is ***** ***** 5 years old. Our vet checked her over last week for the respiratory issue. He indicated all was normal

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Grayton?

Very active just got back from a 2 hour visit to the park

thank you
these sound like two separate issues. It is not common for dogs to end up with bloody urine while they are on antibiotics. Some pets will develop yeast infections either of the ears or vaginal area if they are on antibiotics but we would not expect to see blood in the urine. I am glad that she is otherwise feeling good and does not seem to be lethargic or depressed. I would definitely recommend following up with your veterinarian tomorrow to discuss having a urinalysis completed just in case she has a urinary tract infection. I know that sounds like it would be a bit impossible since she is on antibiotics but it may depend on which antibiotic she is on. Continue to monitor her urine for additional blood. It may have been a one-time event and you may not see it again. Also monitor for signs of urinary tract infection which includes having accidents in the house, urinating very small frequent amounts and painful urination. You also May notice increased drinking of water.
Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
It is also very important to offer lots of fresh water. You can even add water to her food to increase water consumption.
Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Sometimes dogs can develop a sterile cystitis which is just inflammation of the bladder which causes blood in the urine. Sometimes it can be a one-time event and can be related to stress. If it does not happen again and she does not seem to be in pain then you may not have to do anything.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns. I am happy to help if you are satisfied with my assistance, a 5-star rating is always appreciated. Even after the rating we can continue this conversation for a week so please keep me posted on how she is doing and if you notice additional signs and symptoms. Sincerely ***** *****By the way I would recommend finishing the course of antibiotics that your veterinarian prescribed for the respiratory issue.

We'll check the urine again later and also call our vet first thing in am. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. Not excessive water drinking or other abnormal symptons.
That is good. I am glad she is feeling good. Keep me posted!
