She ate part of a dead animal yesterday but ate normal food last evening, and this morning and has not thrown up or had diarrhea. Now, however, she’s very lethargic and feels warm to my touch.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

Her only symptoms are lethargy and warm to the touch and lack of appetite.

I am sorry you are worried about your dog eating a dead animal and is now lethargic.

Is she eating and drinking?

If you lift her lip, are her gums pink in color, or pale?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Can you take her temperature? Normal is 101.5.

She ate tthis morning but it’s dinner time and she doesn’t seem interested.

Don’t have a thermometer. Gums look pink
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 2 months ago

Are her gums pink in color? Is she drinking? Most of the time when a dog eats a dead animal, they are fine or have some vomiting and diarrhea.

Good her gums are pink; if they were pale I would be very worried.

If she won't eat, try to encourage her to drink to stay hydrated. Offer water, ice chips, broth, or Pedialyte.

Ok. I’ll encourage her to drink.
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 2 months ago

If she won't drink, or if her gums appear pale, then it might be time to get her to a veterinarian. She could get an infection from the dead critter.

I am so sorry but I can't make calls for the website; the offer came from then and not from me.

Okay. I’m on an island and can’t travel to a vet after dark. What symptom would make me want to see an emergency vet? What should I be looking for?
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 2 months ago

Pale gums, not eating or drinking at all.

You can test her for dehydration by gently pinching skin over her shoulders and releasing. It should be back in normal position in less than one second. If it takes longer, she is dehydrated.

Did you do the dehydration test; is she not dehydrated?
