My dog has been...

My dog has been diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia and is on 3rd day of antibiotics. I'm trying to make her comfortable by elevating her sternum on a pillow so she can breathe easier. She hasn't started coughing yet. Just wondering what is the expected timeline for her time start coughing up the infection.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Coughing can be worrying. The Expert will know what you should do. What is the dog's name?

Tinkerbell

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Tinkerbell?

She's older (8 or older) but we have a poor handle on her history since she is a rescued mama from a puppy mill.

Hello. My name is***** have been a veterinarian for 20 years. I am happy to help you with your question. Give me just a moment to respond.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

There really is no timeline. She may not cough much or at all. Is she just on antibiotics or other medications as well? When is her next recheck?

She's on 2 broad spectrum antibiotics plus anti nausea. I have a family vet follow up next weekend. ER only gave 7 days of antibiotics.
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
I was mostly worried that she hadn't coughed at all. I'm just trying to keep her comfortable while body fights.

Okay, so at this point I would not be worried if she is not coughing as long as she seems to be improving after 3-4 days of antibiotics. By improving I do not mean she is completely better but her breathing should be a little easier and her gums should be pink. If she was not eating well, she should start to eat more.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Your vet can prescribe a bronchodilator or a mucolytic which could help get mucous and "junk" out of her lungs and bronchial tract if needed. That would most likely help her cough mucous up. But that is something your vet would prescribe

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

It may be a good idea to have your family vet listen to her lungs, and look at her x-rays, tomorrow or Tuesday just to see if your vet wants to add any medication. Does that make sense?

Good. She's already breathing deeper, although labored. Gums are pink so long as she is propped up. Also using cold vapor humidifier. She only refused food starting last night so, I think we're on the right track.

Okay, as long as she is improving. That sounds good.
