Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on your dog, please? What did she do once she was outside those many times? Drinking a lot (polydipsia) is a danger sign for quite a few disorders but most of them aren't likely in such a young dog:

renal (kidney) insufficiency

hepatic (liver) insufficiency

urinary tract infection involving the kidneys

diabetes mellitus (polyphagia/increased hunger is also seen)

Cushing’s disease/hyperadrenocortisolism (polyphagia/increased hunger is also seen) - not at her age

hyperthyroidism (polyphagia/increased hunger is also seen) - not at her age

pyometra (purulent endometriosis) in unspayed females

hypercalcemia (increased serum calcium level often seen with lymphoma, a negative prognosticator in renal insufficiency, and primary hyperparathyroidism)

electrolyte (sodium, potassium, chloride) imbalances

Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocortisolism)

diabetes insipidus

brain tumor involving the hypothalamus

If her polydipsia persists her vet will need to perform a thorough physical exam including diagnostics in the form of fasted (for at least 4 hours prior to a blood draw; never restrict water, however) blood and urine tests in order to clarify what those symptoms are signifying. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

she has mostly liquid poop.......I just slept about 4 hours....as I guess she did......I fed her and she ate her food as she normally does........a bowl in abt 15 seconds.....she seems better......but I do notice what appears to be a red bruise on her nose......that could be her stickin in it on someones ac unit outside

Thank you for the additional information. I would suspect she ingested pad and box while you were gone. Adding psyllium seed (Metamucil) at a dose of one tablespoon to each of her next three wet food meals can act as a bulk laxative and help move foreign material along in her gastrointestinal tract. Persistent vomiting and/or anorexia would be worrisome for GI obstruction and should prompt attention of her vet. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

no vomit......aside from the constant visits outside.....and her nose bruise=she is unchanged.....even persisited in fighting n biting me when I initiated play to see if that still interested her.......so maybe I just try your suggestion to add the psyllium and observe for a few days

Yes, that makes sense to me. Eating and playing normally are positive prognostic signs. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.
