Customer Question
My 4 year old...

My 4 year old golden retriever has been barking and scratching at the door at night. My boyfriend and i both work from home so we’re constantly with him, we take him on at least 1 30min walk a day, and we let him out right before bed. He paces and pants heavily along with the barking and scratching at night for the past 8 days. I’m not sure what’s going on with him.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Have you looked to see if there is a wound on their foot?

I just checked and there’s no wounds

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the Golden Retriever's name?

Channing

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Channing?

About 2 weeks ago i had brought him to the vet as discharge was coming from his right eye.

Hello and thank you for using this site to help you.

What door is he scratching at?

When he does this do you take him outside? Does he eliminate?

Has anything changed in the home or complexes surrounding the home?

Is the dog crate trained?

He scratches on the front and back door.I’ve taken him outside a couple times but he doesn’t go.The only thing that has changed is our apartment basement is being renovatedChanning has never been in a crate
Dog Veterinarian: Sally G., Dog Training Consultant replied 2 months ago

Thank you for that information. It may be the renovation that has him antsy. Even though you are home with him all day, you are awake and alert whereas it is different at nighttime.

If he is not going out to potty , then something is making him nervous, possibly he hears something that you do not.

You can try giving a dosing of over the counter melatonin or Benadryl which will calm him.

You can also try keeping some dog music on so he is not hearing anything along with a floor fan in the area he stays so there is some white noise.

Melatonin found in drug stores by vitamins

Benadryl http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/diphenhydramine-benadryl
