I am not set up to make phone calls but would be happy to answer any questions you have online. The states/province I am licensed in do not allow me to communicate via phone calls, unless I have previously physically examined a pet. I could lose my license for doing so. If you would like I can opt out and see if there is another veterinarian that can take calls.

What should I do. Is my dog Ok?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Altman, Veterinarian replied 2 months ago

Armour thyroid 90 mg is 0.150 mg of levothyroxine x 20 tablets = 3 mg ingestion and at 50 pounds (22.7 kg) this would be an ingestion of 0.132 mg/kg (normal dose is 0.02 mg/kg so this is a 6 times overdose)

Since it is possible this ingestion was within the last hour I would advise inducing vomiting with 3% hydrogen peroxide 1 tsp per ten pounds (1 tbsp& 2 tsp) then walk around to mix it in the stomach and agitate the lining. If no vomiting within 10-15 minutes it can be repeated once only in hopes of inducing vomiting.

A single acute overdose in small animals is less likely to cause severe thyrotoxicosis than with chronic overdoses. Vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity to lethargy, hypertension, tachycardia, tachypnea, dyspnea, and abnormal pupillary light reflexes may be noted in dogs and cats. In dogs, clinical signs may appear within 1 to 9 hours after ingestion.

If there is no vomiting and GI upset is seen then please take a few precautions:

- Pepcid (famotidine) 0.25 mg per pound every 12 hours for 3 days

- Leash walks to help the ingredients pass more readily of >15 minutes

- Next meal should be a bland diet of white rice and lean boiled meat such as chicken in small more frequent meals but waiting at least 12 hours after vomiting has subsided if there is this symptom

Indications your dog should be seen by a veterinary er sooner include: sticky gums that are pale, yellow, blue, purple, temperature rectally >103.5, progressive lethargy with less responsiveness to you, vomiting or diarrhea that includes blood, resting respiratory rate (breaths per minute) >60, swollen abdomen.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions I can assist with or clarify.

What if it was over an hour. I was not home
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Altman, Veterinarian replied 2 months ago

I suspect at this dose you may see gi upset but this is not a high enough dose to be toxic to your dog. Removing any remnants in the stomach with peroxide is advised to minimize symptoms today but hopefully this gives you a guideline of what to monitor for and precautions to take

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance to you both

If the information I have provided was helpful I would be grateful if you would rate our chat with the five stars at the top of the screen so I am compensated for my time. Thank you and best of luck to you both, truly!

This can help within two hours to remove any residual amounts in the stomach and worthwhile to see if we can reduce or dilute the effects today
