Customer Question
He has been vomiting...

He has been vomiting and his back legs are weak. he is also lethargic

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What sort of animal are we talking about?

He is a dog - maltese cross toy poodle

Veterinarian's Assistant: This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the Maltese?

Ok thanks - not really

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. How old is your dog, please? How long has he been vomiting, lethargic, and showing hind leg weakness?

On and off for a couple of days. But he has a sensitive tummy and this does happen so we usually keep him off food and give him water with a syringe and he bounces back but this time he is weaker. We took him to the emergency weekend vet who said it might be gastro or pancreatitis, but there is no treatment for this except IV fluid... the vet gave him an anti-vomiting injection, painkiller and under the skin fluids. Overnight IV was very expensive so we have now brought him home. We gave him syringe every 30 minutes all night. He had some diarrhoea but no vomiting. It's now the next afternoon and he seems sick but better than last night. We will take him to our normal vet tomorrow. But apparently, there is nothing to do for these illnesses but keep fluids up and ride it out. What do you think?

Thank you for the additional information. I think that diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests +/- imaging in the form of abdominal ultrasound are essential in an attempt to clarify why he behaves in this manner. His clinical signs aren't pathognomonic (specifically indicative) of any one particular disorder but do suggest inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), hepatitis, pancreatitis, nonspecific gastroenteritis, or Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism). Please continue our conversation if you wish.
