Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 26 days ago

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. A "hot red ear" is either reactive (allergically medicated), infected (bacterial, yeast), or both. Irrigating the "brown stuff" out of her ear with an over the counter ear wash for dogs is smart but now Bug's vet needs to perform a cytology (microscopic exam of a small sample of ear canal surface) to see if abnormal numbers of either bacteria or yeast are present and if so, prescribe an antimicrobial and antiallergenic ointment to be instilled in that ear. These ears are often representative of a more general allergic dermatitis - a flea saliva allergy, atopy (allergies to environmental allergens such as pollens, molds, dust, dust mites, etc.), or food intolerance. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
