Customer Question
I have 2 dogs...

I have 2 dogs that have had stomach issues after eating milk bone brushing chews. The shitzu/bischon ate one yesterday and is vomiting the little that he ate 9 hours ago, bringing up the canned food now. The 62-lb mix has had apparent stomach upset (no diarrhea or vomiting though) since February off and on.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name and age?

Bentley is 9 years old (the shitzu/bischon) and Dumas will be 6 in july

Hello,

Well, must be careful. With one pet having intermittent digestive issues before these bones were ingested, may have other chronic problems that need to be tackled.

Vomiting causes can include:

- Dietary indiscretion (eating something you do not know about)

- Stomach or intestinal foreign body

- Something that was given to them (new food, new treat, human food)

- Intestinal parasitism (not just the worms, but the microscopic bugs like Giardia and Coccidia). They can cause vomiting also, not just diarrhea

- Toxin exposure would be less likely, unless you have reason to suspect exposure to a chemical.

- Less commonly, endocrine diseases like Addison’s

- Generally, in older pets, I am also concerned about organ disease (liver, kidneys) and cancer.

To help settle the stomach you can use of the following, but not as a replacement for veterinary examination include

1.Pepcid A.C. (famotidine) comes in 10mg, 20mg, or 40mg tablets.

You can give it every 12 hours. You can give 0.5mg per pound of body weight. So, a 20 pound dog would get 10mg.

2.Prilosec (omeprazole). It comes in 10mg or 20mg tablets.

You can give in every 24 hours. You give 0.5mg per pound of body weight. So, a 20 pound dog would get 10mg

Prilosec is the better choice for pets with ongoing symptoms because it is a stronger antacid and lasts all day. But! Not great for short-term illness since it takes a day to kick in. Pepcid works faster, but shorter duration.

Either way, with vomiting even the canned food, that strongly suggests a vet visit, ideally today, is warranted. We don't know for sure the chews are the cause, and if the cause, to be causing continued illness may suggest a more serious gastritis or even pancreatitis. Therefore, well worth the vet visit to get some really good anti-vomiting medication, that can be used along with one of the antacids above.

Based on your pets history, the vet may suggest some additional testing like a basic blood test or even a pancreatitis test to be safe. It would be a good idea.

Hope that information helps.
