Hi Pearl! My 5lb Maltease ate some very small chunks of gravel and then some drywall. Now there's blood in its stool. Normal or do I need emergency help?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name and age?

Q. 5 years old

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Q.?

Nope. Normal in all other respects... OK

Hi, this is Dr Hill. How long ago did he ingest it? Any vomiting?

No blood in vomit

Ok the drywall can irritate the mouth and stomach and so can the gravel. The blood is probably secondary to the irritation. The biggest concern would be if any of it gets stuck inside. IF that where to happen he would continue to vomit. Hopefully its just irritation. I would start a bland diet of white rice and boiled chicken +/- low fat cottage cheese. You can give 2.5 mls of the ORIGINAL pepto bismol tonight and again in the morning. If he is not eating tomorrow or continues to vomit or is acting lethargic then I would take him in. I hope this helps, Dr Hill
