My dog is 11...

My dog is 11 months old, he is a Australian shepherd , german shepherd mix. He has always had some skin issues and gets allergy injection for itching every 6-8 weeks. He now has developed over the last 3 weeks has developed patches of blackish brown crusty spots all over his belly. Should I be concerned?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about your dog?

He had some breathing issues due to allergies that got better on steroids when he was little

Yes, you appear to be describing epidermal collarettes which are roughly circular skin lesions that begin as pustules and then spread out. The center quiets down and hyperpigments while the rim of the collarette can remain actively infected and inflamed. Collarettes most often indicate bacterial skin infection. Can you upload a photo(s) of these patches to our conversation? You can upload photos by using the paperclip or add file icon in the toolbar above your message box (if you can see those icons on your particular device) or you can use an external app such as dropbox.com/ Please check that the photo(s) is in focus prior to uploading it.

4 weeks ago, he had none of these. It is like they came from nowhere. His belly was smooth. He definitely does not want me to touch them. I feed him grain free food. But he does get milkbones occasionally, blue buffalo and other grain free training treats and peanut butter.

Thank you. The hair would need to be clipped away to see the true extent of the lesions but epidermal collarettes are the likely finding particularly because he has received allergy injections. Whether the injections contain a glucocorticoid (steroid) or the immunomodulary Cytopoint, they'll need to be discontinued and the infection treated with an antibiotic in the cephalosporin class such as cephalexin for 3-4 weeks and 1 week past-clinical signs plus an antimicrobial shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly. The antibiotic is a prescription drug available through his attending vet. You can find the shampoos over the counter. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
