We also have a 15 yr old King Charles who has been diagnosed w/ canine dimentia. She gets lost in the middle of a room, cries out whenever she doesn’t see one of us, cries out periodically thru the night, sometimes as often as every 20 minutes. She too will often splay her back legs and/or plop down suddenly. She also seems especially thirsty and eats her meals as though she is starving. And most recently, she has occasionally been incontinent. She is currently on trazadone. Our concern is that she doesn’t seem tonhave much quality of life, and we don’t want her to suffer.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The noise must be worrying. I'll connect you to the Veterinarian. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

She is quite sway-backed, started to become noticeable 6 or 7 months ago.

Thanks. I wrote up the issues in my initial query.
Has she had any blood work done recently? Is she on any other medications other than trazadone?

She has also been on Tramadol (sp?). Bloodwork 8 wks ago, nothing extraordinary.
Is the hunger and thirst new or was that present when the last blood work was done?

Prefer emails. I have hearing issues. Also 2am here, so to be continued?
Oh I’m in CA! Yes you can get back in am if that works better. We can talk more about her quality of life and other possible options. Goodnight, Dr Hill

More lethargic past few weeks. Often shivers and back legs a little weaker each day. Maybe she’s close to the end, maybe not. She still likes to be on our lap, still eats, drinks a lot of water, but we just don’t know what kind of quality of life she has. Most of the time she is “lost,” crying out, sleeping fitfully, wandering around and then flopping down when her back legs buckle or splay.
Ok. Yes it’s concerning that she’s that weak. When we look at their quality of life we want to make sure she can move around with out pain and she’s eating ok. There is a certain level of anxiety that comes with dementia because they are unaware of their surroundings a lot of the time. It maybe time to consider putting her down. I’m so sorry.
